Rochester, N.Y. — Reporters from the Democrat & Chronicle continued to strike Monday during the long-awaited total solar eclipse.

Journalists walked off the job last week amid contract negotiations with parent company Gannet.

They’re demanding more protections from layoffs and artificial intelligence.

“Negotiating for unions is complicated,” said Tracy Schuhmacher, the newspaper’s food and drink reporter. “We’ve made some progress, but we need to go a little farther where AI is concerned.”

“What’s also important is the people that are here and the people that know how to do things and give them an incentive to stay, to make sure that the staff that you have is able to do the job well,” Schuhmacher continued.

In a statement, Gannett said it continues to bargain in good faith and there will be no disruption for D&C readers.
