Cloud accounting platform developer Xero is taking a DIY approach to artificial intelligence, unveiling an AI-powered smart business companion called Just Ask Xero (JAX).

The proprietary development model ensured greater accuracy AIs that only rely on large language models, Xero said. It also provided data security in line with broader Xero platform measures.

Xero’s tool includes guardrails in the form of a control system to ensure data fed into its large language model are only related to the relevant task, such as quoting an invoice, and that Xero had been given permission to access it.

Diya Jolly, chief product and technology officer at Xero, said the use of generative AI presented some unique challenges in accounting because accuracy was critical.

“Large language models are incredibly powerful yet can be flawed,” she said. “When they are ungrounded and don’t have access to the right information in context, they can make up data points.

“In accounting, we can’t make up information. That’s why implementing a technology like this is so groundbreaking for the accounting industry.”
