WASHINGTON, D.C. (WAVE) – A bipartisan bill to address ransomware attacks in the healthcare industry has been introduced in the U.S. Senate.

The Healthcare Cybersecurity Act was written by Senators Todd Young (R-Indiana), Jacky Rosen (D-Nevada) and Angus King (I-Maine).

The healthcare sector faced a ransomware attack on the health payment platform Change Healthcare earlier this year and Sen. Young said this highlighted the lack of preparation and training during the recovering process.

“In recent years, hospitals and other health care facilities in Indiana and across America have experienced a dramatic increase in cyberattacks,” Sen. Young said in a release. “Our bipartisan bill will take critical steps to strengthen cybersecurity infrastructure and better protect patients’ personal data.”

Sen. Young also said the Healthcare Cybersecurity Act would direct the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to work together to improve cybersecurity and make resources available to non-federal entities.
