What’s the story
Google has announced a range of advanced security features for forthcoming Android 15 software, designed to deter phone theft and protect user data.
The announcement was made during the second day of Google I/O 2024.
Among these new features is an AI-powered ‘Theft Detection Lock’ that uses algorithms to predict and respond to potential phone thefts.
Google’s algorithms are designed to detect motions associated with theft, such as those associated with grabbing the phone and bolting, biking or driving away.
Enhanced protection
Android 15 introduces remote lock and offline device lock
In addition to Theft Detection Lock, Android 15 will also feature a Remote Lock capability.
This new feature enables users to swiftly lock their handset remotely from any device using just their phone number and after completing a quick security challenge. It is designed for instances where the phone is lost or stolen.
Another security measure is Offline Device Lock, which automatically secures your phone’s screen when it’s disconnected from networks, thwarting thieves who attempt to take stolen devices offline.
Security upgrades
Android 15 enhances Factory Reset Protection and account security
Google is also upgrading its factory reset protection in Android 15, which will now necessitate user credentials to use the phone after a data wipe, thereby reducing incentives for theft.
The new software will also require additional authentication when attempting to alter account security settings from an untrusted location.
This feature mirrors a similar one introduced by Apple earlier this year.
Moreover, disabling the Find My Device feature or extending the phone’s screen timeout will now require security authentication as well.
Privacy feature
Android 15 introduces ‘Private Spaces’ for enhanced data security
Google is introducing a new feature called “Private Spaces” in Android 15, which allows users to store apps and information in a separate hidden area on their phone that can be locked with a unique PIN.
This feature is designed to provide additional security for apps that may contain sensitive data such banking details.
The new features will not only be available on Android 15 but also on phones with older OS versions, bringing enhanced safety to many more users.
